Government funding of more than £33m has been released for road and transport schemes in Devon in 2007.
The county council will use the extra cash to tackle congestion, improve air quality and road safety and encourage sustainable travel.
The funding was set as a result of Devon County Council's five year performance, and the proposals set out in the Devon Local Transport Plan 2006-2011.
Devon County Council said that a total of £8m would be spent on local transport schemes, with the remaining £25m being directed on capital maintenance schemes.
Councillor Margaret Rogers, executive Member for Environment, said: "I am delighted to hear that Devon County Council's track record in local transport delivery has been recognised and we have been awarded this level of funding.
"It is paramount that we build on this success and implement the Devon Local Transport Plan 2006-2011 as well, if not better, than the first five year plan.
"The new funding regime is good news and we will continue to press for 100 per cent grant award in the future."
The Devon Local Transport Plan will also provide a preliminary overview of major scheme proposals for improving transport conditions in and around Exeter as well as the Kingskerswell Bypass.
Since 2001, more than £220m of government money has been spent on improving Devon transport.
