Activision's Call of Duty 2 has become the first Xbox 360 title to sell more than one million copies in the US, according to figures from tracker NPD Funworld.

The World War II shooter is also the most popular Xbox 360 game on Microsoft's Xbox Live gaming service.

"We are proud that Call of Duty 2 is the first title to sell over one million units on the Xbox 360 in the US," said Activision's Robin Kaminsky.

"Activision has made a strong commitment to develop leading franchises for the next-generation consoles and we look forward to continuing that successful strategy with our titles launching on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and the Wii this fall."

Since its release last year, Call of Duty 2 has received raving reviews from the worldwide press, earning five perfect review scores from such publications as Gamepro and GameSpy.com, as well as ratings of above 90 per cent from more than 40 outlets worldwide.

The title, which has been nominated for the Golden Joystick Game of the Year award, is the sequel to the highly successful first Call of Duty game, which was released in 2003.

"Call of Duty 2 harnesses the power of the Xbox 360 hardware to set a new benchmark in epic, action games and delivers a movie caliber gaming experience," added Kaminsky.

Microsoft launched the next generation Xbox 360 games console in the US on November 22.

The US firm said it expects to sell around 10 million units of the Xbox 360 worldwide by Christmas.

In addition to playing games, the Xbox 360 can also be used to watch DVDs, view photos and listen to music.
