The 2004 blockbuster The Notebook has been voted as the most romantic film ever made.

The Notebook, starring James Garner, Ryan Gosling, Rachel McAdams and Gena Rowlands, topped a recent survey conducted by leading internet relationships portal Lovingyou.com.

Based on the romantic novel by Nicholas Sparks, the film focuses on an elderly man (Garner) reading a story to an old woman (Rowlands) in a nursing home.

The story he reads follows a young couple, Noah (Gosling) and Allie (McAdams), who spend one summer together but become separated by World War II and don't see each other for nearly 15 years.

When Noah returns to town, he briefly reunites with Allie, who is engaged to a handsome young soldier named Lon. Allie is forced to choose between her fiancé and her first love.

Directed by Nick Cassavetes, the movie generated $81m at the North American box office.

Titanic, starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet, finished second in the Lovingyou.com survey of more than 1,500 people.

The fictional tale of a rich girl and poor boy who meet on the ill-fated voyage of the 'unsinkable' ship is the highest-grossing film ever made, with international ticket sales of a whopping $1.83bn.

Titanic, directed by James Cameron, also scooped a staggering 11 Academy Awards in 1998.

The 1990 epic Ghost, featuring Patrick Swayze and Demi Moore, took third spot, followed by Pretty Woman in fourth and A Walk to Remember in fifth.

Sleepless in Seattle, starring Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan, was sixth, with Love Story seventh and Gone With the Wind eighth.

An Officer and a Gentleman and Romeo & Juliet rounded out the Lovingyou.com top 10.

Other films in the top 20 included City of Angels, Dirty Dancing, Love Actually, When Harry Met Sally and Moulin Rogue.
