It’s not grim up north and most definitely unfriendly in the south, but quite flirty.

These are some of the findings from a nationwide study which looked into the most sociable, friendliest and flirtiest cities across the UK.

The study, conducted by social networking site and events company CitySocialising, involved 15,000 people in cities across the UK.

According to the study, London is the unfriendliest city in the UK. 37% of those questioned considered Manchester to be the friendliest, followed by Glasgow 15% and Leeds 10%. London came last with 5%.

London is the hardest place to make new friends in the UK. 33% considered Brighton to be the easiest place to make new friends followed by Manchester with 21% and Glasgow with 19%. The Capital came last, with 2% citing it difficult to meet new friends in London.

Brighton is the flirtiest city in the UK with 64% of residents admitting to flirting with a friend’s partner, followed by Manchester with 47% then London with 35%. Leeds was the least flirty city in the UK with 11% of residents questioned admitting to flirting with a friend’s partner.

Manchester is the more sociable city in the UK – on average 30% of those questioned had 15 or more friends. Brighton was next then Leeds. Norwich was last.

The classic places to meet new friends are still the best. In joint first place came a club or a bar. The internet was considered the 4th best place to meet new friends after ‘at work’ (2nd) and University (3rd). Cinema came last.

Sanchita Saha, founder of CitySocialising, said: "The study is an interesting snap shot of UK sociability in the 21st Century. The rise of global social networking sites like MySpace means that people are making more virtual friends than ever before, from all over the world, without ever actually meeting them."

"We’re now seeing a rise in regional social networking sites and desire for real-world interactions to cater for people that want to increase their physical local social networks, particularly amongst time-starved city professionals who are seeking to broaden their social circles beyond the office and meet new
people outside their current social networks."
