21st March 2008

Police officers and rescue teams are continuing their search for a teenage girl who was spotted in a distressed state close to Dartmoor's River Dart Country Park.

The alarm was raised by a concerned warden who saw the girl, thought to be 15, on Thursday afternoon.

The Dartmoor Rescue Group has been called in by Devon and Cornwall Police to help with the search. A police helicopter, tracker dog teams and thermal imaging gear are also being used to try and locate the girl.

The girl is described as having long blond hair, wearing blue shorts, a white vest and light-coloured trainers. Reports that some of the girl's clothing was bloodstained are unconfirmed.

Chief Inspecter Dave Sumner said: "We are appealing for anyone with any sightings of information to contact the police immediately.

"If you were in the area at the time the girl was first seen, please get in touch.

"We are very keen to hear from anyone who can provide a genuine explanation for the sighting.

"If you know of a party happening in the area, or an event taking place around the time of the incident, contact the police."

Anyone with any information should call the police on 08452 777444 quoting log number 546 20/03/08.

Chief Insp. Sumner said: "We just want to know what has gone on. There may be an innocent explanation. We want to make sure the girl is safe."
