With preparations underway for the new RNLI lifeguarding season, the charity is calling for people with lifeguard qualifications to join the team.
RNLI South West now provides lifeguards at 87 beaches across the region after two Cornish councils, Kerrier and Penwith, handed over lifeguard cover to the charity.
Steve Instance, RNLI divisional inspector for lifeguards, said the South West needed an additional 258 recruits to cope effectively with the extra demand.
RNLI lifeguards must have a high level of fitness and applicants must hold nationally recognised beach lifeguard qualifications.
However, the RNLI are also offering some suitable candidates the chance to achieve these qualifications by attending an intensive training course.
"The RNLI is lucky to have a high number of lifeguards returning year on year," said Mr Instance.
"However, there is always a natural movement of some to go off and pursue other careers after a couple seasons on the beach."
