Detailed plans for a £100m re-development of St Mellion Golf Club have been given the green light.
Caradon District Council has approved the plans for the Cornish course to get a new four-star 80-bedroom hotel, a refurbished clubhouse and improved road access to the site.
The proposals will also include the build of 265 golf homes and the upgrade and re-configuration of the golf courses.
The redevelopment aims to bring the European Tour golf competition back to St Mellion and the estate's golfing, leisure and accommodation facilities are being upgraded in time for this to happen in 2009.
According to the club, which is located near Saltash, the scheme will create 50 extra full-time jobs and provide around £200,000 of financial support to local employment initiatives over the next five years.
In addition, St Mellion Golf Club will also contribute £220,000 to local highways projects.
Conditions for approval included developing an acceptable design code, managing the existing bat population sympathetically and any other protected species or fauna, having a site travel plan that endeavours to reduce the carbon footprint of the resort, sourcing goods and services locally where possible and making financial contributions to community projects.
"This is a hugely important scheme - not only for the St Mellion resort but for the local community, Cornwall, Devon and the South West region as a whole," said project manager Barrie Aspinall.
"We worked very hard to make sure that our plans met the requirements specified and look forward to continuing to build relationships with local residents so that they are kept fully informed about all that is happening.
"Securing a contract to bring European Tour golf to St Mellion is very exciting. Not only will the competition provide a major tourism boost for the area, it will also help to raise Cornwall’s profile as a beautiful, high quality destination that offers visitors exceptional service and facilities."
