Dartmoor Point to Point at Flete Park

15th April 2008

The idyllic setting of the Flete Estate in the South Hams is the setting for this Saturday’s point-to-point which looks set to provide a great day out for race goers.

Seven races make up the card, the first of which is off at 2pm with the members’ race. Normally, hugely competitive, this year’s renewal looks no exception with several decent horses set to line up.

They are headed by the Alan Walter-trained Bucket Awl, unbeaten this season in three starts with Jenny Carr in the saddle. He’s won at Flete before, in 2006, and he’ll be a warm order to follow up.

The four miles men’s open, with riders competing for the Lord Mildmay Memorial Challenge Trophy, is a stamina sapping test around the hilly course and horses with plenty of staying power should be at the top of any list. The entries include Sara Monica, a winner at the course last year, and The King’s Fling who has won over three and a half miles.

Eleven are entered for the ladies’s open and Mandy Hand could hold the trump card with Dante’s Back, a winner of a members’ race at Cherrybrook two weeks ago. Hand came out of retirement to make a winning come back in the race. Dantes Back’s opponents include Dr Cerullo, a winner twice this season, and Quick, who took a good mixed open a couple of weeks ago on his first start this season.

Confined entries include Sigfords Way who won in good style under Alice Mills at Great Trethew.

Brooks Castle’s form is looking solid – he beat Be Brief at Kilworthy and this gelding has since won. The six year old is entered in the Intermediate where Ted One could be another runner.

The 24 entries in the confined maiden include Iamwhatiam, third at Great Trethew, and Fenny Lily who has been very consistent this season.

Entrance fee for the race meeting is just £15 per car, including all passengers, and there is a licensed bar, catering and on-course bookies, as well as various trade stands.

The course is situated off the A379 ten miles east of Plymouth. Leave the A38 at Ivybridge via the B3211.
