Back at Flete Park

30th April 2008

A busy weekend of point-point action is on the cards this weekend with two meeting in the Devon and Cornwall area.

Modbury Harriers at Flete Park, Saturday May 5

Saturday's action is at Flete Park in South Devon where the first of six races is off at 2pm and a parade of hounds will be included in the day's entertainment. First race is an open maiden where there are 19 entries. They include Vixen Tor who finished second at the course two weeks ago and is sure to attract plenty of interest. Trainer Marie McGuiness has a couple of entries who both have chances. Over To Charlie was going well in a maiden at Upton Upon Severn in March until she fell three fences from home and Max' Choice was beaten a length at Chaddesley Corbett in a competitive maiden in April.

Benarina is another entry. She was second to IamwhatIam, entered in the restricted, at the course a couple of weeks. Others in the restricted to look out for are easy course winner Ryeman who was a popular winner for long-time supporter of point-to-point racing Denis Williams and Lucy Fielding-Johnson's lovely four year old mare Primitive Quest who could provide Richard Woollacott with another winner.

The ladies' race is a marathon test run over four miles and it looks like a competitive renewal. The consistent Blue Business, Bill Du Pont's Brown Cockle, a winner of three races this season, course winner Kingsmill Lake, Quick, Touch Closer and Winter Scene are all entered.

There's a two and a half mile maiden and of interest is Dee Valley Boy, third at Trebudannon and entries in the men's open include Lisheen Storm, The Quarry Man, Concert Pianist and Sara Monica who all have chances.

The course is situated near Ermington in South Devon and entrance is £15 per car.

Stevenstone at Vauterhill, Monday, May 5

Rosettes are presented to the first three horses home at the Stevenstone meeting at Vauterhill on Bank Holiday Monday which is an added bonus for owners.

Seven races make up the card, with the members' race off at 2pm and the maiden has been split with 25 entries in each.

Camilla Scott had the nightmare of watching Southwestern crash out at the second last in the Champion Hunters' Chase at Punchestown on Saturday when travelling like a horse with a winning chance, and while a point-to-point is scant consolation for landing such a big surprise, she'll have plenty of supporters at Vauterhill backing her runners. They include the four times winner So Long who is entered in the mixed open and must have plenty of cut in the ground; Jack's Taxi who has a good chance of landing his second success of the season in the members' and Yufo who may go well in the intermediate.

Emergence is another entry in the intermediate and if she is none the worse for her fall in the mares' championship final at Clifton-On-Dunsmore in April, she could go well. Master Kevin is another who could go well if he turns out again following his win at Trebudannon on Saturday.

Con fined entries include plenty of consistent horses who will give you a run for your money and include Big Brendan , Ballybrown, McSolo and The Quarry Man.

In the first division of the maiden, Miss Purdy and Alfie's Isle are one's to note and in the second division Max's Choice looks the pick.

The course is situated near High Bickington and will be signed from the A377, A3124 and the B3227. Entrance is £10 per car and driver and £5 for each extra person up to a maximum of £20.
