Brixham clubs team up to organise charity regatta

15th May 2008

The Rotary Club of Brixham and Brixham Yacht Club are teaming up for the first time to organise a charity regatta on Saturday 19 July.

The regatta will take the form of a Charity Pursuit Race where the handicaps are applied at the beginning and the slowest boat starts first and the fastest boat last, with the aim of all the competitors crossing the finish line at the same time.

Well-known on the yacht racing circuit as great organisers of races, Brixham Yacht Club will be sending out the entry forms.

Alan Haynes, commodore of Brixham Yacht Club, explains: "We decided to team up with Brixham Rotary for this event. They do a lot of good work in the town raising money for local charities and we wanted to help organise something that's fun for families."

"The yacht club has marvellous views across Torbay and a pursuit race is great entertainment. We particularly would like to encourage those who have never raced before to take part. This is a chance to have a shot and race on an even keel."

Incoming president of Brixham Rotary Club, Tony Spashett, said: "We hope to attract a lot of sailors and their families to this event as it is in aid of local Rotary charities."

"With the beautiful backdrop of Torbay and the great facilities at the yacht club, the race should be great fun. We have a barbecue in the evening and with the help of the great organisation by Brixham Yacht Club, it should be a very enjoyable day."

The race is for boats over 18 foot in length and entry fee is £10 per boat with the cut-off date for entries 15 June 2008. Visiting yachts can moor at the Brixham Yacht Club pontoon.
