Hell Bay is a handsome, privately owned hotel which stands in one of the UK's most dramatic settings - right at the edge of the Atlantic on the tiny island of Bryher, the smallest community in the Isles of Scilly.
The dog-friendly hotel opened 12 brand new studio suites in March 2005 - marking the final phase of a re-development programme that began in 2003.
The new bedrooms - which replaced 12 previously existing rooms - complement the style of existing accommodation, with interior use of Malabar fabrics in cool and relaxing shades and wooden ship-lap exteriors, giving a sophisticated New England feel. Located on the south side of the property, and with uninterrupted views toward the Bishop Rock lighthouse and out over the Atlantic, all of the new suites have their own patio or balcony.
Bryher is a tiny island (one mile long and only half a mile wide) situated 30 miles west of Land's End - next stop America! Mystery and legend are intertwined here and on its sister island, Tresco, which have a history going back 10,000 years. The hotel is named after the nearby Hell Bay, which for hundreds of years was notorious for ship wrecks.
Hell Bay is the inspiration of owner Robert Dorrien-Smith. A paradise for adults and children alike, the hotel has a total of 23 suites, all boasting stunning views. White sanded beaches are only 75 yards from guests' bedrooms, while seabirds, puffins and seals are the nearest neighbours. All guest rooms have up-to-date comforts, including satellite television, video, internet access, and en suite bathrooms.
Fish, crab and lobster caught locally by Bryher fishermen play a large role in chef Graham Shone's imaginative menu, and Hell Bay Restaurant - with more breathtaking sea views - has attracted a huge following from both guests at the hotel and those staying on neighbouring islands. In addition, the hotel has The Lookout lounge and a cosy bar for snacks and drinks all day long.
Leisure and sporting facilities offered by Hell Bay include a heated outdoor swimming pool, fully equipped gymnasium, a sauna and spa bath, games room and children’s play area. There is a small, 9 hole par 3 golf course, while the coastal paths offer wonderful walking and peaceful beaches provide 'get away from it all' solitude.
