There is a clear link between the weather and the number and types of crimes that are taking place in the Netherlands, a study says.
The study, conducted by Dutch crime website Misdaadkaart.nl, revealed that the colder it gets outside, the more burglaries that take place inside.
Misdaadkaart.nl collects and edits all the reported crimes in the Netherlands, and makes them visible by plotting them on maps.
The research compared more than 50,000 crimes with the daily weather situation in the country.
It shows that crime types like "burglaries", "public drunkenness", and "violence" are influenced by the weather.
Robert Jan de Heer, founder of Misdaadkaart.nl, said: "The analysis shows, that temperature is related to the number of crimes.
"The colder it gets, the more burglaries are taken place."
According to the study, the difference between the number of burglaries on a hot day (25-29C) and on a cold day (0-4C) is about 50 per cent.
The report also found a direct association between rain and wind and the number of burglaries committed.
Strong wind results in 25 per cent more burglaries, while greater rain causes 30 per cent more burglaries to be carried out.
Violence takes place mainly when the weather is sunny and hot, the study discovered.
Public drunkenness is more common when the weather is cold (25 per cent more compared to hot temperatures).
Mr Jan de Heer added: "Finally, it is striking that the number of road accidents are rising with over 15 per cent when the sun is shining brightly."
